How to play Lost Vowels

Lost Vowels shows each answer with its vowels removed and asks you to put them back. Here is how a run works, how scoring works, and how to get better at it.

The aim

Each answer is shown as a skeleton: A, E, I, O and U are gone, and every consonant keeps its original position. Y stays visible. Spaces and punctuation stay too, which helps with answers of more than one word. Rebuild the full answer.

Choose a category

There are six: English Words, Cities & Towns, Animals, Food & Drink, Football, and Science & Nature. Each has its own set of ten puzzles for the day, balanced across easy, medium and hard. Play one for a quick break, or all six.

Scoring

Every puzzle starts at three points, so a perfect ten-puzzle run scores 30. The price of help is shown before you take it.

  • Solve it with no help: 3 points.
  • Reveal the clue: minus 1 point.
  • Reveal the first contextual hint: minus 1 point.

Tips

  • Read the length first. The gaps between consonants tell you how many vowels can fit.
  • Look at consonant pairs. Two consonants that cannot sit side by side in English almost always had a vowel between them.
  • Use the category. Knowing you are in Food & Drink rules out most guesses before you start.
  • Take the clue only when you are truly stuck; a 2 is still better than a miss.
